To catapult to next generation products, Lurn is expanding its Technology Center in India. We are looking for an extremely hands-on, technically strong, fun, yet professional person to fulfill this exciting position in our company. You have to have a passion for Internet and must be interested in distributed large databases. You should be entrepreneurial by nature, have drive to lead database design/operations, and work directly with CTO and CEO.
DATABASE LEADER – THE ROLE
You will be responsible for database modeling, database architecture, and its operation of Lurn’s new platform. The platform will facilitate a network of buyers, product producers and marketers in buying, selling, configuring and marketing functions. The platform will use LAMP technology and must be designed for distributed, scalable and highly available web based system. Specific areas of responsibilities will include:
Hands-on Technical (80%):
- Database modeling, architecture and design of transactional, messaging and reporting database using MySQL or similar technologies; Database must meet functional, performance and scalability needs of the new platform
- Data analysis of business requirements
- Heavy programming and scripting of SQL, views, stored procedures, and triggers
- Troubleshooting and solving database related problems
- Optimization and performance tuning of databases
- Data warehouse design and implementation
- Work with systems operations team and provide 2nd level DBA operational support/expertise

Leadership (20%):
- Mentor software leads and developers on use of best practices and design of databases, relationships and queries
- Develop work estimates, work breakdown structure and schedules; Meet timeline and quality goals
- Interface with business, management and operations to successfully complete project.
SEEKING – THE CANDIDATE:
This job is not for the faint-hearted. We are seeking a highly entrepreneurial type, technically sharp, very organized, and a leader i.e. a DB technologist who wants to make a name for him/herself in the e-learning, web-marketing, and e-commerce area.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors in Information Management (or related discipline) from a 1st/2nd tier institute (IIT/IISC/NIT/REC/ and other top state engineering colleges) specify GPA or % marks; Masters degree preferred
- Ideally 6 years, but minimum 4 years in progressive database design, DBA and operations experience; last two years must be in high-transaction MySQL or PostGres environment
- Be passionate about data organization, database, extremely hands-on, and SQL, Stored Procedures/Triggers, partitioning, and charting; Some experience in programming in scripting, PHP, PY, Perl or Java is also required
- Must be experienced in (at least one of) commerce, e-learning, social network, or community development type of web applications
- Communicates well verbally and written; Desire to push yourself to achieve goals, break new grounds, and learn new technologies; You must be upbeat, high-energy, a highly creative fast learner, have technical, analytical, and systems thinking skills
Desired:
- Experience or knowledge of large distributed data architecture under Hadoop or similar systems
- University research or work experience on data organization for search, taxonomy
